Side Effects casts you as a patient trying to cure your psyche (a set of disorder cards) before others do the same. Each drug you use to treat a disorder opens you up to new disorders from opponents, and episode cards trigger punishing effects on untreated disorders. The game balances cunning, negotiation, and a dash of luck, with a thematic nod to mental health that’s respectful yet engaging.
The goal is to be the first player to treat all disorders in your psyche, either with drug cards or therapy cards. Alternatively, in some variants, the game continues until one player remains as the sick loser.
The game includes 89 tarot-sized, linen-finish cards:
Disorder Cards: Represent mental or physical conditions like tremors, madness, or anorexia.
Drug Cards: Specific treatments for disorders, each listing side effects (other disorders you become vulnerable to).
Therapy Cards: Wild cards that can treat any disorder (except tremors) but allow the disorder to return later.
Episode Cards: Trigger punishments on opponents’ untreated disorders.
Bonus Cards (in some editions, e.g., Kickstarter): Include cards like Misdiagnosis or High Tolerance for extra chaos.
Side Effects is a fast-paced, strategic card game that blends humor, cunning, and chaos in a unique pharmaceutical theme. With simple rules, vibrant artwork, and engaging "take-that" mechanics, it’s perfect for game nights with friends who enjoy tactical play and a touch of dark humor.
